Groundspeaks Reply: "Nudecacher persona can continue ..."

Subject: RE: [GEO] From Rothstafari: Nudity

Hi Gary,

I didn't mean to give you the impression that we don't support the role of Nudecacher within the geocaching community. In fact, we really do. However, it is a tough line for us to walk with respect to what is appropriate vs. inappropriate on the site while, maintaining a family friendly nature.

It is our firm believe that frontal nudity or rear nudity is inappropriate for a family friendly web site. Those are the only photos we are asking to have removed. Keeping those photos on the site is not an option.

However, the balance of those photos are ok and we will defend our decision to allow them. I hope that this is enough support for you, because, quite frankly, we are not willing to allow the bare-assed photos.

Hopefully the Nudecacher persona can continue to exist without graphic nudity. It would be a shame if that were not the case.

Sincerely,

Bryan

Pretty strong statement of support! Thanks, Groundspeak.

My Response to Groundspeak

I've sent this reply to the warning from Groundspeak:

Subject: Re: [GEO] From Rothstafari: Nudity

After the first set of my pictures were removed in June of 2003, I shifted from being Gary Young nudist and geocacher to creating the Nudecacher fictional persona. The apparent restrictions on photos changed the activity from geocaching to creating a carefully staged character. Nudecacher shows a nudist with nudist values as a geocacher. The object is to show that nudists are just like other people and to create good will for them by showing one within the geocaching framework. Nudecacher became quite well known and I seemed to be successful. As Nudecacher, I have received greetings and goodwill statements from many in the worldwide geocaching community for three years. Obviously there has always been some controversy over Nudecacher. I have put much effort into cooperating with Groundspeak and the geocaching community and mitigating controversy as best I could. Nudecacher requires the tolerance and implicit support of Groundspeak to exist, since they own and control the site. The only option for me is not to play the game. Your email to me sounds like I no longer have the support required to maintain the Nudecacher persona. If that is the case, I'll retire Nudecacher and remove the Nudecacher artifacts from geocaching.com.

Are we coming to the end of Nudecacher?

This note was logged objecting to my recent picture at (GCYCJ9) It's Tin, Man! by Fall Guys:

September 21 by Forest Engineer & Sunny Daze (140 found)
Re 'Nudecacher's' uploaded photo: Holding a hand over one's genitals does not constitute legal coverage for compliance with public nudity laws. He was lucky that an observer with cell phone didn't turn him in...

I don't know if it's related, but then I just received a warning from Groundspeak:

Dear Nudecacher,

While I realize that you like to semi-post nude images of yourself to the cache pages and have been doing it for a very long time, you are not permitted to post any images that contain frontal or rear nudity. I have received a number of recent calls and emails regarding some of your photos.

After checking your profile, it is clear that you have posted rear nudity photos to our site. I have removed just a few the more recent ones but, quite honestly, I do not want to go through every one of your images to clean them up. And, with all due respect, the last thing I really want to have to hear about over the phone is how someone's child had to look at a photo of your ass crack (please excuse my language, please...).

And so, I am asking that you immediately remove any images you have uploaded to our site which contain rear or frontal nudity.

Some great examples of innappropriate:
Gee Creek (Tuesday, July 20, 2004) and Little Church on the "Prairie" circa 1890 (9/16/03).

Going forward, if we receive further complaints regarding actual nudity (where you are not covered up) posted to the site (your ass, etc), rather than go through all of the photos to pick out the bad ones, I am only going to ask the admins to remove your gallery images all together.

I hope you understand that this is not personal and I hope you understand why a family friendly site has to do things like this.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

All the best,

Bryan

This is the first time that I've received this warning. I always try to cooperate and will review my gallery to remove all pictures that appear to be referenced.

Nudecacher in Reno

This was cache search number 46 on my 10 day road trip to Nevada. I found 54 caches and had 4 DNFs in Washington, Oregon, Nevada and California on the trip. The research park nearby generates so much radio interferience that my key clicker couldn't communicate with the truck to operate the locks. I had to use the actual key for the first time in a long time. I'll have to graphite the locks. It was very windy today, but warm enough for this nudist. I took the The Walker/Runner and Miss Cachie travel bugs to move along and left Stupid Rubber Chicken, Bauble Bug #2, and Elwood. Elwood hitched a ride from Fallon on his way to Vermont. Stupid Rubber Chicken and Bauble Bug #2 came to Reno to PARTY! So Nevada cachers, show them how to have a good time.

Hello,

I am contacting you on behalf of several members of the Great Basin and Eastern Sierra (GBES) geocachers Admin Group. This group owns the Reno Travel Bug Port you recently visited.

We are happy you enjoyed finding the cache on your vacation. As Reno/Tahoe area is a vacation destination for many people and families, our travel bug port gets visited often both online and of course by geocachers.

We have received several communications regarding the photograph of yourself at the cache site; and we have discussed the matter within the admin group. Several people are disturbed and feel that the photo is inappropriate for a family website that is frequented by youth and children, and other adults that feel it is offensive.

We therefore respectfully request that you remove the photograph in question. You are more than welcome to replace it with one of yourself fully clothed.or at least with summer type attire such as shorts or swimsuit.

We are sure you mean no harm at all, and appreciate that everyone has the right of their own feelings and perspectives of various subjects in life. We just do not want others to feel offended.

Thank you for your kind understanding.

Rogue Nudecacher!

Found this cache on my trip home from San Francisco, where I ran the Bay-to-Breakers 12K race. I ran it naked and finished 17,712th out of 62,000 runners. What a blast!

I've stopped at this park a number of times over the years, but this is the first time I took time to cache.

Took $1,000,000 and left a Mount10bike plug nickel that is worth $1,000,000 at least. How's that for trading up?

I'm sorry about this, but could you please remove the picture from your FTF log on my new cache, Helm's a'Lee? My mom's freaking out about it.
